 Economic Causes-Discontent among Peasants and Artisans

  • The self-sufficiency of the village economy lost due to commercialization of  agriculture.
  • Both the peasants and zamindars were dissatisfied with revenue policy and harsh methods of revenue collection of British.
  • In the newly acquired territories, the British established direct contact with the peasants, who lost their rights and were often evicted from their land.
  • Large areas of lands were confiscated and sold to the highest bidders.
